Diarrhea and intestinal inflammation – Mattes the dog

Slime biscuits mixed with blood

Mattes is a lively dwarf gray-haired dachshund aged four and a half years. For about six months he has been suffering from diarrhea, which is sometimes better and sometimes very bad. After all sorts of different foods fail to improve the situation, Mrs. Polders takes Mattes to the vet. The ultrasound shows that the intestinal mucosa is clearly inflamed.

Pancreatic enzymes or exclusion diet?

The vet first gave her a pancreatic enzyme to improve digestion – “but that didn’t help.” The vet then recommended an elimination diet “That was too lengthy for me, as Mattes also seemed to have cramps. The mucus blobs mixed with blood were scary and they stank terribly.”

Cytolisa test brings clarity

Finally, Mrs. Polders decides on the Cytolisa test for Mattes. The result speaks for itself and explains why Mattes cannot tolerate many ready-to-eat foods: Mattes cannot tolerate pork, duck and turkey, but he can tolerate chicken. Almost all vegetables and potatoes, barley, oats, millet, wheat and yeast should not be included in Matte’s feed.

Feed conversion

Finding suitable food with this test result is not easy. Mrs. Polders finds a yeast- and grain-free dry food from the company VetConcept as well as a canned food without vegetables. Mattes then begins to recover, he now only has diarrhea very rarely and the ultrasound shows that the intestinal mucosa is no longer inflamed.
